Academy of Instrumental Music (AIM)

Curriculum Subject | Years 7–12

About the Program

The Academy of Instrumental Music (AIM) provides a structured and engaging music education experience through a curriculum-based subject at James Nash State High School.

Students receive small-group instrumental lessons and rehearse in school ensembles, developing musicianship through a combination of practical and theoretical learning. Instruments offered include brass, woodwind, percussion, and strings.

AIM students perform regularly at events such as Showcase Evenings, Eisteddfods, Fanfare, and community functions, building real-world performance experience and confidence.

Students in Years 11 and 12 can receive QCE credits as part of their AIM participation, contributing to their Queensland Certificate of Education.

Why Music Education Matters

Music education contributes to:

  • Enhanced academic performance and cognitive development

  • Improved emotional expression, confidence, and resilience

  • Greater coordination, memory, and listening skills

  • Development of teamwork, leadership, and time management

Participation in AIM fosters confident, capable, and well-rounded learners.

What Will Students Learn?

Through AIM, students will:

  • Develop technical control and expressive capability on their instrument

  • Strengthen ensemble performance and collaborative skills

  • Learn music theory, aural skills, and repertoire interpretation

  • Build focus, discipline, and a commitment to regular practice

  • Gain experience in both small and large ensemble settings

Leadership Opportunities

Students have opportunities to:

  • Mentor younger musicians and support junior ensembles

  • Take on leadership roles within their instrumental section or ensemble

  • Contribute to school-wide events as creative leaders

  • Year 12 students may apply for the role of Creative Arts School Captain

Eligibility & Commitment

The AIM program is open to all students in Years 7–12. Prior instrumental experience is helpful but not essential—new learners can begin in consultation with the Instrumental Music staff. Enrolment occurs via an Instrumental Music Application Form.

Students are expected to:

  • Attend weekly lessons and ensemble rehearsals

  • Practice regularly and participate in performances

  • Uphold high standards of respect, dedication, and teamwork
